Default How many minutes (hours?) do you meditate for?

    Hi everyone.

I'm wondering two things: a) how long do you meditate for, and how regularly and b) is there a certain time of day or certain amount of time that seems to work best for you?

For me, I typically mediate for about 20 minutes daily, and I'll go as long as 40 minutes, although that's rare. I sometimes miss days, and that's usually when I wait until the evening to meditate, and I get too tired.

Usually 10 to 20 minutes before bed with some soothing background music and before I get out of bed I do some deep breathing meditation to get my blood oxygenated, works every time. I try to do this daily.

When I have time I do some sound healing with headphones on and self awareness exercises sometimes for an hour usually about twice a month.

    Great question.

Meditation has no time. It is not something separate from your daily activities. Meditation is the art of living in the present, a very beautiful art since it is constant, needs a constant remembrance.

Meditation should be called living. If you eat and your mind is somewhere else while youre eating then youre not eating at all. Youre only stuffing yourself like a robot. Different techniques are put forward so you can use them to suit the time of day. At first, to live consciously is very boring and you only do it because you want enlightenment or whatever it is. Then comes a time when you forget the result and you start becoming one with the meditation, where you and the meditation cannot exist without each other.

The meditation is then considered complete, when you can meditate in sleep. So dont consider meditation a "1 hour thing", you dont need to sit in meditation to meditate. While walking walk, while eating eat etc.
Forget the result, to me there is no result, no nirvana, no enlightenment because just living consciously is enough of a result what more do you need?

I try to meditate every moment, now im trying to take my meditation into sleep, after that i can consider the meditation a 24/7 thing.

Thanks Curt and Brett, I've learned something from both responses. The answers are better than I expected.

Of course any other responses are very much welcome.

At the beginning, you should try 5-10 mins a day. No sense of killing or torturing yourself. It is nice to be able to do an hour or more, however if you end up daydreaming in the process and not able to focus any further, what good is meditation then. So, do what you can as often as you are able to focus.

Also, at the beginning level, it's about sitting and breathing/ aware of breathing/ concentrating on here and now- focus only on this. There will be a level where you can start walking/ meditating- eventually living your life and meditating at the same time. This is not it- don't rush, master each level. Your level is different than others. When you are ready to move on, you will know.

Meditation after all is not a race, and you don't have to look pretty doing it- you just do it.

Meditation is not always about empting ones mind or have a concentration, daydreaming is a great relaxant and should be utilised in meditation, meditation is a broad subject and not just going for the Zen practise, but to be able to ebhance and release ones worries or thoughts or even find solutions that may not be found in a fully conscious state.

But each to his own in the end.

Then why meditate? Why not just sit or lie down and daydreaming or fantasizing- instead of going to trouble "meditating". If a person is falling asleep during practice, then stop and take a walk, get fresh- instead of sitting there just for a sake of sitting- (getting lost); just to complete the 10 or 20 mins requirement.

Also, while meditating, a person may experience many feelings or see many imagines- remember, Luke Skywalker seeing images of his friends being harmed while training w/ Yoda, in The empire strikes back? - same thing. One should not lose his/her grounding, and focus on here and now (breathing) , especially not during Meditation. Meditation is not a multi-tasking activity. Thinking takes energy. Daydreaming takes energy and most important- focus , which a person (meditating) trying to regain..... through meditation. I am sure there are other types of meditation which focus on daydreaming, however, I am sure the majority who wants to meditate doesn't do it to let their minds wander- most likely it's the opposite.

A lot of people and teachers actually teach this as meditation, though not in a true sense of what meditation is, but I get your point. Not everyone is after the same thing some people would like to sit at certain times and create their own reality but others may not, it is all about the individuals goals and what works for them.

    And welcome to the forum.
