    Default Easier Said Than Done..

I've attempted to meditate on several occasions. When I've managed to calm myself to a level getting close to what I would call trained meditation, I can sustain it for about ten-twenty minutes tops, although I feel good and if I do it before I sleep, I sleep very well. Although I am often finding myself that it is harder to meditate even if I want to, as though my ADHD mind is buzzing way to fast to even comprehend the thought of slowing down. I don't know if I wanted questions or discussion on this but I just wanted to put it out there..

Question : Why is it that you want to meditate? Answer : "Hoping i will gain something"

There is nothing to gain in meditation, not even your so-called calm state, any "non-meditator" can attain to a calm state. The only problem you have is meditation. Meditation is like a drug, they should change the name from meditation to "psychological drug". The "stillness" meditators experience is false, since it is done through effort, anything done through effort will disappear.

Some people are using women, sports,God,work as a drug and youre using meditation. Dont waste your time on perfecting a drug. If you have fun being in meditation then be in it, but i doubt that anyone has fun just sitting doing nothing...

Your problem is, that you are meditating to try and be like someone, maybe you want to be like Gautama buddha with all his intelligence or maybe you just want to be like the calm dude across the street and i am telling you that in your meditation - nothing is gonna happen. If you dont believe me then meditate for another 1-70 years and maybe someday you will be like "aha, there is nothing to gain or realize"....

If meditation is nothing then why are you here? From your description the only reason to meditate is to have fun and who has fun sitting around doing nothing.

Young Guardian, there is something called binaural beats that can help you get to a point in meditation that you may be looking for. It has frequencies a couple of hz off from each other and it creates beats that can help you relax. I am working on some music that uses both binaural beats and the solfeggio scale that if it sounds good I may share here. Google binaural beats to learn more about it and there are plenty of Youtube videos that you can put on headphones and listen to that uses both of these methods.

I grew up with music and tend to believe that music is more of a tool and should be used to align the body than it should be for entertainment. Using music to have fun is great also but it really can be used to help with other things in your life. I am a musician so this may be biased.

Curt cracks me up. He is right much of the time, and meditation isn't a quick fix, but it definitely helps.

For me, meditation has helped me stay mindful (present in the moment) for longer periods of time than before I meditated. This one benefit alone is HUGE for me. In fact, meditation may be the single most important activity I do in my life (excluding breathing, eating and sleeping).

I get busy and tired and those two things keep me from meditating. I also have ADD tendencies, but meditating helps mitigate that. Sometimes, when I don't feel like meditating, it's the best time to meditate.

BTW, my meditation is basically just being aware of the air going in and out of my nostrils. Sometimes I'll focus on something as long as I can (5-30 minutes). The focus may be on a mundane household item or a loved one.

I agree RinkJustice I find Curts point of view enlightening in it's self, I meditate to relieve anxiety but it is not a magic bullet. Curt is here to stay for this reason he has a valid point.

I find the best meditation for me, is being in awareness and long deep breaths.

We all need an earth otherwise we would always be in the clouds wandering around aimlessly and getting sucked in by all the get some point quicker, experiment and slowly build on what works and achieve you goals with some effort.

    Hi Young Guardian,
I would say that what you're experiencing is normal, especially to someone fairly new to meditation. It may not be that your thoughts are buzzing away, but that instead you are more aware of your thoughts than normally, so they seem to be going really fast. Have you ever tried mantras? You may find it easier to repeat one thought than to try and watch many. I'm glad it's helping you sleep.
By the way, lots of studies show meditation can help with things like ADHD, so good luck.

You do better than I do on a general basis with this amount of time. Sometimes I'm lucky to get 5 minutes of meditation without focusing on something like a candle or to a piece of music as I try concentrating on breathing. I find I start to wander mentally. That could be, in itself meditation because if you think about it, it's is concentrating on your thoughts. You can focus on one specifically as suggested or you can teach yourself to zone in on something that is a pleasant memory and use it as a meditative focal point much like people do for visual based meditations.

So, do you believe then that Meditation is a waste of time or do you think it has a place like eating and sleeping? I agree it shouldn't be a fix or used to expect anything more than a way to relax. I don't think it was ever meant to take the place of medication nor should it be a sort of telepathy seen on TV where one can, if they meditate hard enough move actual objects.

Is it possible to meditate while taking a bath? I don't want to drown. I am not being funny, I really want to know if meditating while taking a bath is possible. Is it truly meditating if I am having to make sure I don't drown or fall asleep and drown.
