Your posture is important but not a strict rule here are some to try so you can find that even ballance between comfort and staying awake through the process.

On the floor With Cushion.Comfortable with a big cushion.
Sitting Crossed legged on a cushion will keep your focused, Keep you back upright no slouching, and if you fall asleep you can roll over and use the cushion as a pillow.
On your Back.Good for the back.
Laying on your back especially on the carpet, keeps your spine straight and allows for chi(life force) to flow, also good when doing Kundalini exercises when you become more experienced.
Seated.Simple easy Effective.
Sitting on a favorite chair or a comfy recliner, couch or outdoor fold able chair, some people will prefer to sit crossed legged on the chair, but keeping your feet on the ground allows for blood floor and keeps you supported if you fall to sleep.
Tip: If you find yourself falling asleep often use a crystal and roll it around in your hand.
